West-end Memories Dr.
Sabrin Ahmed Intern,
Z-1 ZHSWMC
& H Moonlit
night, surrounded by a complete silence but the heart sounds, 10-12
girls (around
20 years)
were scared and
terrified of some unknown fear, holding each others’ hands listening
to one of them telling real ghost stories like “a first year medical
student was reading at his hostel room late at night- suddenly while
reading, looked out through the window and saw a hand cut at the wrist,
blood stained waving at him”. So
now, one can imagine how scared those girls were to listen to all those
stories they had in their stocks.
That
night they had to go to the toilet with their friends and some had to
wait till next morning with painful full bladder. These were the girls
of first batch in their first year of medical study of Z. H. Sikder
Women’s Medical College in 1993.
In first batch there were about 25 girls in total. About 10-12 were residing in the hostel under the supervision of a very friendly teacher Dr. Shelly. Our class schedule was from 9 am to 5 pm with an hour of lunch break. In the evening after a long tiring day we all used to gossip and look through the window with desire in our eyes perhaps some guardian would come with delicious food for us. The main topic of our gossip was the teachers, how they talk, laugh, how they teach, who is handsome, who’s wife is beautiful, etc.
Everyday
we had 2/3 Items (a
kind of class test).
From late evening we
used to start study. Sometimes we used to appear at Items without study
too. Our teachers and classmates were very friendly. We were like a
family and respected our teachers very much. Our senior teachers and
professors were all renowned, respected teachers of different government
medical colleges .
We feel very
fortunate to have learnt from those respected teachers.
One
day in the dissection room we sat for Items (front of the forearm) on
the “Cadaver”. On that day one of us had worn gloves and a mask to
avoid the smell of formaldehyde used to preserve the Cadavers. To us it
was very funny and surprising and we criticized her. But to our teacher
it was very insulting for the cadaver (Dead
body used to teach medical students). That day we learned to respect the
Cadaver (one
day that cadaver was a human being,
may be
he had a
family
too). In our clinical years, initially it was quite frustrating. Being the first batch of this college we had to suffer the shortcomings of a newly establishing hospital. We did not have enough patients to have a good clinical orientation. But we have seen this college and hospital grow day by day. This institution is a dream of our very respected honorably chairman Mr. Zainul Haque Sikder. This institute is also a dream of the teachers, students, doctors, nurses and staffs who were and are involved with it. We have seen how a 70 years old man can work day and night to make his dream come true. He has established “Cardiac Care And Research Centre” which is a grand achievement for him, for the cardiac patients of our country and for the doctors and students to have super specialty clinical exposure. Now
we the students of the first batch are doing our internship in this
hospital. Hopefully we would be able to establish ourselves in the
various fields of medical science and services. Where ever we shall be
in future we will always cherish the memories-good or bad, sad or joyous
relating to our medical college and the man we will always remember is
our uncle Mr. Zainul Haque Sikder whom we love, respect, fear, honor and
from whose life we have learnt a lot, how to balance life like a bicycle
rider who rides looking much forward to keep the cycle running balanced
to reach the target ahead. *This
medical college is situated at western end of Dhanmondi.
