Cardiology Departments in all major hospitals , form some of the most dynamic sections in clinical medicine. This is also because the science of cardiology has been in the forefront of rapid techno logical advances.
The cardiology department in Z. H. SIKDER CARDIAC CARE AND RESEARCH CENTRE started its activities in January 99 with the above lofty aims in mind and with a goal of setting up a Modern department of international standards.
The credit for starting the Cardiology CCU and Interventional Cardiology unit goes to Dr. Ajith Kumar, who was an interventional cardiologist at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute, Trivandrum, India. He provided the solid technical and academic background which is a prerequisite to starting a good department. It is creditworthy that he laid a good foundation for the protocols to be followed in various sections of Cardiology and laid a working framework for Coronary care. Cardiac surgical support and Interventional Cardiology programs.
The good work initiated by Dr. Ajith was carried forward by Consultants who joined the department later-Dr. R. Ravikumar M.D., D.M., Dr. Matiur Rahaman, D.Card, PhD, and Dr. Shams Munawar MRCP, D.Card, supported by Dr. Shamirnul Haque, D.Card, Dr. Nazmul Islam, D.Card, and Dr. Noman, D.Card. The department after a sustained initial thrust has gained all round appreciation from patients in Bangladesh. The outpatient departments are busy with patients coming for medical guidance
Emergency care and seeking guidance for surgery and interventions. In the last I year we have started a fully active CCU (with IABP, Bedside pacing and Central line facility and state-of-art Ventilators) and some of the best managed cardiac wards in the country. Here it would not be out of place to mention the excellent work done by our specially trained cardiac nurses in the CCU and wards. In fact our Cardiac nurses have earned excellent name in this country and set new standards for everyone to follow - we are indeed proud of them!
Z. H. SIKDER Cardiac Care and Research Centre has also been in the forefront of Coronary and Valvular interventions in Bangladesh. The Cardiac Catheterization Lab has been especially active for the past 6 months. We have started all Current interventions like Coronary Stenting, Balloon angioplasty, Stcnting of vein grafts and Mitral Balloon Valvuloplasty. After the installation of an Ultra modern Acuson Colour Doppler with dedicated paediatric probes, we have started a full fledged Congenital Heart disease assessment Clinic for sick children and blue babies. We also intend starting Paediatric interventions soon.
Although we had a good beginning, we are still conscious of the landmarks to be crossed and the future goals to be achieved. In the ever changing world of Cardiology our motto has been "EVER VIGILANT, EVER FORWARD". This forward looking approach will neither allow us to be complacent nor to sit on our laurels.
