cardiac care and research center came into being in December 1998. First
open heart surgery (CABG) was done successfully on 21st February 1999.
Advocate Mahbubul Alam from Gazipur district was the benificiery. First
Coronaiy angiogram was done on Mr. Mubarak Ali on 4th march 1999. He is a
man from Barisal. Afterwards this center is running smoothly to attain its
zenith. Back up supports from the management, indomitable efforts and
untiring performance of the doctors and other staff has made this center a
”centre appreciated by all” - from top to bottom of our countrymen. So
far, we have done 160 open heart operations that includes CABG, valve
replacements and repair of congenital defects. Most of the CABG, were
combined arterial and venous grafts, some were total arterial grafts and
some were exclusive venous grafts. About 5% cases were grafted on beating
heart with decision being dictated by the patient’s overall situation.
Mean cross- clamp time was 25 ±7.5 minutes and by-pass time was 37 ±11.7
minutes. Anesthesia had been very smooth, with not a single patient
crashing in the theatre, either during induction of anesthesia, or during
surgery even while weaning from by-pass, the most crucial time during
open-heart surgery. Rather scintillating surgery by the surgeons saved us
from lot of stress and mental, as well as, intellectual agony. These were
possible because of commendable performance of our chief cardiac surgeon
and clinical director, Dr. Murali Vettath, MBBS, DNB, MCh, who had lit the
lamp in every worker of this center since his first step in our soil. His
inspiration, active participation, indomitable courage, pioneering role in
every step made every thing simple and possible here. In bypass surgeries,
we had one surgical mortality so far in a patient of 75 yrs. Mr. M. A.
Razzak died on day four because of hypersensitive reaction followed by DIC.
Along with Dr. Murali, are Dr. Kalam, Dr. Kuldeep, Dr. Ramakant, Dr. Amran,
Dr. Quraishi, Dr. Shoukath, Dr. Hassan Sheriff and Dr. Bidyut at different
designations in the Cardiac surgical department. In
the world of anesthesia, Dr. T. Prasandan MBBS, MD, flown from India to
our centre at the reckoning of the chief surgeon, started his magnificent
job with two local anesthesiologists - Dr. Shahidul Islam, MBBS, MD, and
Dr. Maj. Muzibur Rahman MBBS, FCPS. They actually worked like, “It is
not the bullet, but the man behind the bullet, that conquers the battle.”
To our misfortune, we had to endure the reality of Dr. Shahidul Islam’s
early and unexpected demise. But
their learned contribution to surgical success, have to be told every
moment, everywhere, and to every body. In
cardiology department, of course, Dr. Ajit kumar MBBS, MD, DM, first
started the battle. Very soon he got co-fighters like Dr. Ravi Kumar MBBS,
MD, DM, Dr. Shams Munwar, MBBS, MRCP, D.card, Dr. Motiur Rahrnan, MBBS,
D.card, Phd., who being enforced with Dr. Nazmul Islam, MBBS, D.card, Dr.
Sharnirnul Huq MBBS, D.card, Dr. Mutassirnul Karim MBBS, ,D.card., and Dr.
Noman MBBS D.cardThcy got the forces of medical officers like Dr.Ferdous
Khan, Dr Harun or Rashid and Dr Robiul Islam could do a wonderful
performance. To our bad luck, we had to face the pain of untimely death of
Dr. Karim. So
far they have accomplished 300 CAG, 15 ballooning & stinting and 20
permanent and temporary pace makers. I must mention the names of those
cardiac stars who first started glittering in the horizon of our hospital,
before the establishment of cardiac centre, like Dr Mourischu, and Dr. Lee
from Singapore and Dr. T.A. Don Michael from University of California, Los
Angeles, USA. We should remain thankful to their initiatives. Our
perfusionists, Mr. Raj Kumar and Anarnul Haque kept their eagles eyes open
with their By-pass machine to keep the body alive when heart and lungs
were captivated from their functions. Like them, Biomedical engineers,
cath lab technicians, nursing staffs and every body else did their maximum
for all the success so far we have achieved. I should appreciate the pains
and initiatives taken by Sr. Minija in organizing the cardiac OT almost
single handedly in the beginning. In
line, I must thank Mr. Z. H. Sikder, founder chairman of this centre who
ignoring all the comforts, had been always with us. In cases of seriously
sick patients, he prayed to the almighty Allah for early getting-well.
Also, the directors, especially executive director and managing director,
extend their helpful hands as and when necessary. Although
we are at the beginning of the flight, we have future plans to start other
advancements, in both the cardiac sectors - cardiac surgery and cardiology
like Electrophysiology, AICD, LASER, Rotablater, Nuclear cardiology;
Ventriculoplasty, Heart transplantation etc. to make it one of the best
centres possible. Dr.
