Honorable Minister for Finance, Mr. Shah A M S Kibria,

Honorable State Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Prof. Aman Ullah,

Distinguished guests. Ladies and gentlemen. Assalamo - Alaikurn,

It is our proud privilege to welcome you all this afternoon on the occasion of the formal inauguration ceremony of the Z H Sikder Women’s Medical College & Hospital (Pvt) Ltd. and its attached Cardiac Care & Research Centre by the Honorable Prime Minister of the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh, who, notwithstanding her enormous preoccupation, has come here to grace this memorable occasion as Chief guest. Her presence here today is a great inspiration for all of us and reflects her profound interest in the development of medical education and upliftrnent of health care facilities in our country particularly in the specialized fields.

Mr. Z. H. Sikder, the founder & Chairman of this great organization needs hardly any introduction, as he is widely known for his interests in construction work, Real Estate development, Industries, Banking and most important of his entire pioneering role in the spread of education especially for the women. Establishment of Zarina Sikder Girls High School & College in Dhaka, Monowara Sikder High School in Kodalpur, Monowara Sikder College at Kartikpur, Bangabandhu High School at Bhadergonj and very recently the Millennium Jnternation School at Dhaka are only a few of his noble works in the spread of Education.

The Z. H. Sikder Women’s Medical College & Hospital established in the year 1992 on a vast area of land on the western side of Dhanmondi having a built-in area of over 500,000 sq. ft. enrolled the first batch of students numbering only 23 out of the 100 approved seats in the session 1992-93. The college is affiliated with Dhaka University and recognized by BM&DC. Eight (8th) batch of students are being admitted this year in the session 1999-2000. About 700 hundred students both local and foreign are now studying here. The academic performances of the students in the Professional examination are commendable. In the 1st Professional MBBS examinations of September 1995 and May 1997, our students occupied 5 & 4 position respectively including the 1st & 2nd positions out of the top ten places amongst candidates of all medical colleges under the Dhaka University. The students of the first two batches have already become doctors and are doing their internship training. The academic atmosphere in the campus is very congenial and the students remain busy and engaged with their activities under the supervision of the qualified and experienced faculty members.

There are provisions of hostel accommodation for all foreign students and 5000 of the local students in the college campus. All the departments of the college and hospital arc equipped with most modern facilities for exposure and training of the students & doctors in the development of their knowledge & skill. Side by side with development of the conventional departments required for undergraduate medical education, specialized units like Plastic Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Cardio thoracic Surgery and Cardiology units have been added for better exposure of the students.

A Nursing training centre has been set up very recently to produce good quality Nurses in general and train them for specialized units subsequently.

The Cardiac Care and Research Centre attached to this Institution has started functioning from December 1998. Six foreign consultants in the field of Cardiac Surgery, Cardiac Anesthesiology and Interventional Cardiology and 50 specialized Nurses, Technicians, Biomedical Engineer etc. have been recruited from abroad for this centre. This team along with our local doctors & nurses have been doing excellent job in the centre which include all investigations related to cardiac problems, coronary angiogram, PTCA, permanent pace making, coronary artery by-pass grafting (CABG) and other open heart surgeries.

It may not be out of place to mention here that the founder of this Institution has set up this cardiac centre at a huge cost and efforts, to achieve the twin objective of mitigating the plight and sufferings of our cardiac patients along with their attendants in foreign countries and also to save considerably the huge drainage of our hard earned foreign exchange for such treatment abroad. In this connection, I cannot but highlight the difficulties and hurdles being faced by the management in running the centre due to the registration problems of the foreign doctors and their work permit. With solutions of the problems of the expatriates and if the current trend of activities of the centre is accelerated, it is hoped, that the much needed technology transfer in this field will be achieved in no time.

Ladies and gentlemen, I don’t like to prolong my speech any more. I have briefly highlighted only some aspects of this great Institution. We have plans to open up a Renal unit & Neurology unit soon which will enable us to provide comprehensive health care to the critically ill patient.

I, once again, would like to thank you all for kindly attending this ceremony.

Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu.
